Samsung TV Home Button Not Working: 5 Ways To Fix

These days, pretty much every household has a smart TV in it. Gone are the days of the old cathode ray tube monsters – and we couldn’t be happier to see the back of them! 

Naturally, with these smart TVs becoming so popular in such a short space of time, the market has been flooded with thousands of companies, supplying possibly millions of different models. Of course, some of these are going to be excellent, whereas some will be absolutely abysmal. 

Yet, of all of these brands, few are held in the same high esteem as Samsung are. Over the years, they have moved with and adapted to each and every advancement, assuring that they stay in the top tier of smart TV manufacturers. 

However, despite their excellent reputation, this doesn’t exactly mean that all of their gear will work perfectly 100% of the time. Unfortunately, this just isn’t the way that technology works. 

Instead, it is best to think of technology in these terms: the more things that can go wrong, the more things will go wrong. However, with Samsung, these occasional problems are rarely anything to be all that worried about. The same is true in this case. 

Yes, the home button breaking on your remote is incredibly awkward. However, it can be fixed nearly every time! So, with that in mind, we have put together this little guide to help you get everything back to normal as quickly as possible. With that, it’s time to get stick right into it!

How to get the Home Button on your Samsung TV working again

1) Try discharging the remote

Admittedly, if you haven’t had to do this before, it may all sound a little strange and complicated. But nothing could be further from the truth. Discharging the remote is effectively taking the batteries out with a few more steps. 

It is also a really effective technique for resolving these kinds of minor glitches when they pop up. To give it a try, just follow the steps below and you should be done in a minute. 

• First up, you will need to take the back casing off of the remote 
• Next up, take out the batteries
• Now for the strange bit. While the batteries are out, press down and hold ANY button for at least 20 seconds 
• After this time has elapsed, all that remains is to put some brand new batteries in to replace the old ones. 

And that’s all there is to it! As a side note, it is always worth using batteries from a reputable brand. They will reduce the likelihood of further glitches like these and last much longer. 

For most of you, that should be enough to fix the problem. If that isn’t the case for you, it is time to move on to the next step. 

2) Try resetting the remote

As we mentioned above, the above tip is what will fix it in nearly every case, However, if it doesn’t, there is always the opportunity to up the ante a little to get it done. Next up, we are going to assume that there is some minor bug or glitch at play within the TV itself. 

When this happens, the easiest and most effective technique to restore a bit of normality is to try a reset. If you don’t know how to do this, we have laid out the steps for you below. 

• The first thing to do is switch the TV on and open the settings menu
• In the settings, just scroll down to the general tab and hit the reset button 
• Here, you will need to enter a code (0000) to reset. Once you have entered the code, hit the reset button. 

From here, the TV will take care of the rest. Let it do its thing and it will reset and eventually reboot. Once it has completed these steps, you should notice that the menu button is working again. If not, we will need to once again up the ante with a more invasive technique. 

3) Try a reboot

Admittedly, rebooting your Samsung TV is very similar to restarting it, albeit a little more aggressive. For example, this will delete any settings that you had saved. 

However, we do stand by this method as it will clear out the more stubborn bugs that may have accumulated over time, giving your TV the best possible chance of working normally again. 

To get it done, all you need to do is remove the power cord from the socket, so that no electricity can make its way into your set. 

After this, the main trick is that you just let it sit this way for at least 10 minutes. Once this time has passed, plug the TV back in and try switching it on and using the menu button again. 

4) Check for software updates

As is the case with any smart TV and OC, every now and then, the software will need to be updated in order to ensure that it is performing to its best potential. As it stands, Samsung are constantly improving and updating their software. 

Normally, these updates will be done automatically. However, it is always possible that you may have missed one or two somewhere along the line. But don’t worry, this doesn’t mean that you can’t go back and grab them now.

To check for updates, all you need to do is go to the official website of Samsung and check to see are there any software updates available for your TV. 

If there is anything there, we would suggest that you download it immediately. Then, after the download is done, reboot your TV once more and check to see is everything working as it should be. 

5) The button may just be broken

If none of the above steps has worked for you, there is only one more possibility that comes to mind for us. The logical assumption is that the issue isn’t actually technological in nature, but mechanical instead. 

It could just be that the menu button on the remote is broken. If so, the best way of dealing with it is to just replace the remote entirely. But first, check if the TV is still in its warranty period. If it is, Samsung support will be able to arrange a new one for you or repair it. 

Asides from that, we would recommend that you only replace the remote with the remote that matches your TV. Don’t settle for a universal remote. Yes, they are cheap, but they can also be more than a little problematic in the long run.
