RAM is the computer’s way of storing temporary data rather than a cache. Storage is often known as memory and it’s the permanent data stored on the hard drive. The majority of storage is provided through RAM but RAM causing computers to freeze is a common issue. For this reason, we have various troubleshooting methods with you!
RAM Causing Computer To Freeze
1) Temp Files
To be honest, the majority of us don’t know about the temp files but they can take up too much space on the computer. These files can also take up space on the hard drives. With time, these temp files can start to defragment the drive’s data which results in a slowdown of the computer. In addition, it can result in freezing by clogging the RAM. That being said, if the RAM is causing the computer to freeze, delete the temp files on the computer by following the instructions mentioned below;
- Press the R and Windows keys at once and the dialog box will appear
- In the empty field, write down “temp” and hit the enter button
- Then, press the A and Ctrl buttons and press on the Del button for deleting the temp files
- As a result, the temp files will be deleted and the freezing issue will be resolved because the RAM will be freed up
2) Virtual Memory
For those who don’t know, virtual memory is the extension of the physical information of the computer. To illustrate, virtual memory is the combination of a hard drive’s portion and RAM. So, when there is low RAM on the computer, the virtual memory of the computer will be used for storing the temporary files. In the section below, we are sharing how you can disable the automatic use of virtual memory;
- Open the settings, go to system, and tap on the advanced settings
- Scroll down to the advanced tab and tap on the change button
- Uncheck the “automatically manage the file size for drives”
- Now, open the windows drive and tap on the “custom size” option. In this section, you can enter the initial size and maximum size of memory that can be used. In the initial size, choose anything from the recommended category and keep the maximum size moderate
- When the values are added, tap on the set button and then the OK button
- Now that the settings are saved, see if the freezing is fixed
3) Memory Diagnostic
When it comes down to the freezing issue on the computer, you can run the Windows memory diagnostic. This tool can help implement the memory tests to see if the RAM has gone bad. However, before you run the diagnostic, make sure that all the data is properly backed up. For running the diagnostic, follow the following steps;
- Press the R and Windows buttons at once and type in “mdsched.exe” and use the enter button
- Now, look for “restart now and check for problems” and the diagnostic will run
- It will launch the standard test mode and you should disturb the computer while the test is running
- When the diagnostic test is complete, the computer is highly likely to reboot, so when it switches on, see if the freezing is resolved
